Our human needs are hard-wired into our neurology. We all have them and we can’t escape them. To have them fulfilled creates fulfilment, happiness, engagement, and high performance. To not have them fulfilled creates stress, disengagement, and poor performance.

It is our responsibility as leaders to make sure that our own human needs are fulfilled as well as our employees. Anything less than this means that we are sabotaging our lives and our business’s results.

One of the Human Needs that is important to fulfill in the workplace is the sense of Belonging. When we feel that we are a part of something, something that brings value to the world and that values us then we feel connected to that cause.

Here are 3 things that you can do today to increase the level of belonging and connection in your company:

  • Recognition and Gratefulness – to give compliments and help people to feel seen heard and met is fulfilling a major human need. Show your gratitude for the people that work with you. Remember people don’t care what you know until they know that you care.
  • Be Present and Encourage it – being with people totally in the now is key for connection. Practice seeking to understand and proactively listening. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason, listen twice as much as you speak.
  • Meaningful Meetings – have performance reviews and conversations with your employees formally and informally that are meaningful. Ask questions for it is the questions that drive the answers. What do you want to learn about this person that will help you connect with them?

When you can help people feel that they belong then you will be helping them to be HappierHealthier, and more Helpful all equalling Higher Performance, or what I call the 4 H’s.

“The culture of a workplace – an organization’s values, norms, and practices – has a huge impact on our happiness and success.” – Adam Grant
