We all have an inner voice, a running dialogue between you and you. In times of hardship, it’s easy for that voice to take control and fill our minds with a seemingly endless stream of negative thoughts.
The way we think and feel has a major influence on our overall health. Having an optimistic mindset can help reduce stress, increase focus, boost energy, and give us more confidence.

Here are 5 steps you can take toward achieving that mastery and increasing the presence of positivity in your life:
That stream of silent thoughts isn’t going anywhere. It’s important to keep those thoughts positive when possible. If you notice that little voice in your head is getting you down, pause and offer yourself a positive affirmation.
2. Positive support
Spending time with people who improve your mood and motivate you is key to achieving a healthy mind. Learn more about healthy support systems here.
3. Manage negative thoughts
While we can’t completely control our thoughts, we can influence their attitude. One way you can increase positive thinking is by expecting a favorable result, rather than preparing yourself for the worst-case scenario. Try your best to have a glass-half-full outlook.
4. Be thankful
Practicing gratitude is critical for a positive mindset. You can do this by writing down the things you’re grateful for in a journal, sharing blessings with friends and family, and celebrating an accomplishment each day.
5. Love yourself
It can be easy to find the smallest quality about ourselves and criticize it harshly, but this isn’t doing you any good. Any time you feel tempted to criticize yourself, try to turn it into a compliment instead! Treat yourself with kindness.
