Our Environment Needs Real Leadership

500 million straws are used in the US everyday, that’s ½ a billion straws everyday going into the environment. Refuse the Straw movement started in the US and is gathering momentum around the world. Its focus is to educate pubs and restaurants on the destructive nature of the straw and change consumer behavior by stopping providing them.

A pub chain in the UK, JD Wetherspoon has bought into the idea and is no longer serving plastic straws automatically to clients and having moved to biodegradable paper straws. They are predicting they will prevent 70 million plastic straws entering landfill or the oceans every year.

“Sooner or later, we will have to recognise that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans.” – Evo Morales

It’s all about changing people and consumer’s behaviors. Only through changing behavior can you reduce the impact on the environment and this takes leadership. Real leadership to change systems and policies that guide the way. A new way of living and operating in the world that takes her and all who lives together upon her into consideration.

It takes 500 years for 1 straw to disappear from the environment and it takes 1 second to say “no thanks” to a straw being put in your drink. What can you do to change your behavior and the behavior of your employees regarding the use of single-use plastics in your company? It is time as leaders that we come together and act in unity to make a permanent change for our children and children’s children.

One idea like Refuse the Straw started by Vivienne Westwood can change the world. Will you?
